Travails of Transportation
Failure to cooperate between the various municipalities has resulted in a lack of overall regional planning for roads and infrastructure. The most obvious example of waste and neglect are the McTavish interchange (waste) and the McKenzie interchange (neglect). Furthermore, the development of alternative transportation modes, such as light rail transit and bicycle commuter routes on the E & N railway corridor, have also suffered.
Individual municipalities do not plan or cooperate with each other, nor have sufficient clout with other levels of government to advocate properly for Greater Victoria transportation needs, (e.g. federal crown corporation Via Rail, federal Infrastructure Canada, or provincial BC Infrastructure Grants program).
The recent completion of the Craigflower bridge, funded mainly by the federal Gas Tax Fund and ICBC, was marred by a refusal of the Saanich and View Royal mayors to coordinate the ribbon cutting ceremony on opening day.
